The Kalani boys soccer team earned its first OIA title, but it can’t catch a break from HHSAA’s seeding committee.
The Falcons received the top seed for The Queen’s Medical Center Boys Soccer State Championships scheduled for Feb. 24-27.
That’s the good news. The bad news is the Falcons will open between either Baldwin or defending state champion Mililani.
The Trojans just barely snuck into the tournament when they suffered their first loss in the OIA playoffs. Kalani is the OIA’s lone unbeaten team.
ILH champion Punahou received the No. 2 seed and will meet the winner between Hilo and Radford.
MIL champion Kamehameha-Maui plays the winner between Kaiser and Moanalua and BIIF champs Kealakehe take on the victor between Mid-Pacific and Kapolei.
The tournament will be played at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.
The OIA has won three of the past four Division I titles with Mililani in 2012 and last year and Kalani getting it done in 2013.
‘Iolani was the only non-OIA school to win it in that span, beating Punahou in 2014. It was the last time the top seed won.

Hawaii Prep is the top seed in the eight-team Division II tournament, drawing Waialua in the first round.
Other matchups are Pac-Five vs. Seabury Hall, Waimea vs. Kamehameha-Hawaii and Roosevelt vs. Honokaa.
Mid-Pacific won the past two Division II titles but is in the Division I tournament this year.
Hawaii Prep finished third last year and unseeded KS-Hawaii made it to the final and finished second.
