When they last met, the Kaiser Cougars stifled the ‘Iolani Raiders during the Punahou Invitational.
This time, Hugh Hogland was much closer to full health, and the Raiders are now in the state final.
Hogland, a 6-foot-9 junior, poured in 28 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked three shots to lead top-seeded ‘Iolani to a 61-42 semifinal win over Kaiser in the OC 16/HHSAA Boys Basketball Division I State Championships.
The win propelled ILH champion ‘Iolani (18-9 overall) into the final for a matchup against ILH runner-up Punahou. The teams met four times during the ILH season, with ‘Iolani winning three times.
“It feels good to be back, especially after we lost last year,” said guard Zach Gelacio, who finished with 13 points.
The Raiders lost to Kalaheo in last year’s final. ‘Iolani won the crown in 2014, edging Farrington.
Hogland shot 12-for-18 from the field on Friday night, dueling against Chance Kalaugher, a 6-5 senior. Hogland also dished out three assists and had just one turnover.
Kalaugher finished with 24 points (7-for-22 from the field) and seven boards. He shot 2-for-11 from 3-point range and 8-for-9 at the foul line. Kaiser’s high-scoring attack was halted by the Raiders; the Cougars shot 29 percent from the field (14-for-49). Kalaugher hustled for four of his team’s 12 offensive boards, but overall, ‘Iolani won the battle on the glass 35-25.
Hogland’s arsenal of shimmy moves and jump hooks with either hand was tough for Kaiser to stop.
“We wanted scoring inside, and we wanted to keep Chance out of rhythm, just disrupt him and make him work for everything,” Raiders coach Dean Shimamoto said.
Gelacio shot 6-for-7 at the foul line as the Raiders shot 74 percent as a team (14-for-19). The Raiders made it a point of emphasis to attack the offensive glass. Nick Kennedy had three caroms on that end of the floor, while Robby Mann (nine points, seven boards) was a consistent force at the rim, where Kalaugher didn’t have much help.
“Last time, they killed us on the boards,” Gelacio said.
Keoua Mahiko scored seven points in the first quarter, then was smothered by Helam Baldomero and other Raiders defenders. Mahiko finished with 10 points, three dimes and two steals for Kaiser.
Coach Branden Kawazoe’s team won the D-II state title last year. This is the first time the program has reached the state D-I semifinals.
The Raiders went to Hogland early and often for a 27-21 lead by halftime. Hogland had 13 points at the break and Kalaugher had 14.
Kaiser got within three early in the second half after Kalaugher was fouled while shooting a 3-pointer. He swished all three free throws to make it 27-24.
After that, the Raiders patiently worked inside-out, and when Hogland wasn’t hitting jump hooks, Mann crashed the boards for putbacks. Kaiser got some momentum after Kalaugher drove for a slam dunk to cut the lead to 37-30, but the Cougars got no closer.
They were still in striking distance after Isaiah Akiona’s corner 3 cut it to 43-36 early in the fourth quarter, but Kalaugher picked up a fourth foul and sat for a stretch. He returned with the Cougars down 49-39 and 5:49 remaining, but they went cold from the field.
Now ‘Iolani gets rival Punahou again.
“We’re going to apply the same formula,” Shimamoto said.
Hogland will face Punahou center ‘Akahi Troske, his teammate on the A‘o a Koa Volleyball Club.
“He’s the next challenge for me,” Hogland said.
