The French bulldog was the most popular dog breed in Honolulu in 2015, according to an announcement by the American Kennel Club on Monday.

The breed also was named top dog in New York, Miami and San Francisco.

The French bulldog was followed, in order, by the Labrador retriever, Pomeranian, poodle and, at No. 5, dachshund.

Nationally, the Labrador retriever took the top spot for the 25th consecutive year, according to AKC registration data. The German shepherd was the second most popular breed, followed by golden retrievers, standard bulldogs and beagles at No. 5.

Fewer officers fired, suspended on Big Island

HILO >> A new report shows a decrease in the number of Hawaii County police officers who were fired or suspended in 2015, compared with the previous year.

The report presented to the Hawaii County Police Commission on Friday shows that two officers were fired after being arrested and eight officers were suspended last year. The figures are an improvement from 2014, when three officers were fired and 17 were suspended from the Hawaii County Police Department, West Hawaii Today reported Saturday.

“I think the department’s doing really well keeping these matters in hand,” said Police Commission Chairman Guy Schutte after Friday’s meeting.

Police Chief Harry Kubojiri said 2015’s reports of misconduct represent only a small percentage of the department, which has 426 officers.

Sgt. Marvin Kelly Troutman Sr., one of the two officers fired last year, was arrested after a domestic dispute in January 2015. He pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct as part of a plea deal. He was also accused of threatening an on-duty police officer, the report says.

Help sought in finding suspect in Hilo theft case

Hawaii County police said Monday they are seeking the public’s help in identifying a man caught on video surveillance stealing items from a Hilo store on East Makaala Street.

Police said the theft occurred at about 5 p.m. Feb. 1 when the thief left the store with items valued at more than $150.

He is described as 6 feet tall, with brown hair and a slim build. He was wearing a black T-shirt and blue surf shorts.
