Coast Guard searches for possible missing swimmer at Waimea

Only the Coast Guard will continue an ocean search today for a possible missing swimmer near Waimea Bay.

Honolulu fire rescue personnel suspended its shoreline operations Wednesday night. The Coast Guard was contacted at 5:20 p.m. by a person on the beach who reported seeing the silhouette of a swimmer outside of the shore break disappear in the water near Jump Rock in Waimea Bay.

However, a fire official Thursday said HFD called off its shoreline search since there have been no reports of missing swimmers or surfers.

The Coast Guard plans to continue to sweep the ocean area using its MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and an HC-130 Hercules aircraft. The air search is ongoing this morning as the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau big wave surf contest is in progress.

The National Weather Service said a very large northwest swell will peak today and linger into Friday, resulting in hazardous surf conditions along exposed shorelines.
