After celebrating two individual achievements in a road rout of Cal State Fullerton, the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team can focus on a showdown with Big West leader UC Riverside.
Hawaii seniors Destiny King and Ashleigh Karaitiana passed career landmarks and the Wahine extended their winning streak to seven with a 70-50 victory on Thursday at Titan Gym in Fullerton, Calif.
King scored 11 points and became the 20th member of the program’s 1,000-point club when she banked in a jumper with 2:45 left.
Karaitiana led the Wahine with 17 points and tied a season high with five 3-pointers to move into second in program history with 132 in her career. She caught and passed Nani Cockett, who hit 128 from long range from 1994 to 1998.
“It was really great to see both of them surpass those records,” UH coach Laura Beeman said in a phone interview. “We knew Destiny was close and I think it’s a little bit of a monkey off her back. And then for Ashleigh to come in and shoot the ball as well as she did tonight and surpass Nani Cockett, who’s such an outstanding player, it was really exciting. It was a great night for our program.”
UH remained a game ahead of Long Beach State for second place in the conference and the Wahine conclude their road trip at UC Riverside (20-7, 13-0 Big West) on Saturday. The Highlanders clinched at least a share of the regular-season title with their win over Northridge on Wednesday.
“It’s all about our process right now and it’s all about us getting better every single night regardless of who we’re playing,” Beeman said.
“Tonight was really the one we needed to get on this road trip. We’re going to go out and play hard on Saturday, but at this point it’s all about us continuing to get better and get ready for the (Big West) tournament.”
UCR rallied to a 77-74 win over UH at the Stan Sheriff Center on Jan. 16 and is led by the conference’s top two scorers in Brittany Crain (21.7 points per game) and Rejane Verin (17.6). Consequently, the Highlanders average a league-high 78.9 points, while UH is holding opponents to a conference-low 58.6.
UH’s winning streak was never in jeopardy on Thursday after Karaitiana and guard Briana Harris (11 points) combined to hit six 3-pointers in the second quarter to propel the Wahine to a 36-18 lead at halftime. Forward Megan Huff added 10 points off the bench and Beeman was able to spread the minutes throughout the roster.
Samantha Logan hit four 3-pointers and led Cal State Fullerton (3-25, 1-13) with 20 points.
