Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams from Hawaii Pacific University will compete at the PacWest Basketball Championships, beginning on Thursday at CU Arena on the campus of Concordia University Irvine. For the first time in tournament history, the schedule will alternate between men’s and women’s games. That means both HPU teams will play back-to-back contests.
The HPU men (19-8 overall, 14-6 PacWest Conference) are seeded fourth and face BYU-Hawaii at 3 p.m HST. The winner will take on top-seeded Azusa Pacific in Friday’s semifinal round. HPU beat BYU-Hawaii 80-58 this past Saturday.
Also a four-seed, the HPU women (17-10, 14-6) face off against Dominican at 5:15 p.m. HST with the winner taking on either Azusa Pacific or California Baptist in a Friday semifinal. In their last meeting, HPU defeated Dominican 66-54. Hawaii Pacific is the defending PacWest Conference tournament champions.
