A high-surf warning is expected to remain in effect until tonight, and forecasters caution that ocean waters could flow over vulnerable coastal roadways.
The warning is expected to be in effect until at least 6 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
Surf along north-facing shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui was expected to decline to about 20 to 30 feet today from about 40 feet Tuesday night.
Surf will also be dangerously large on the north- and west-facing shores of Kauai and Niihau and west-facing shores of Oahu and Molokai.
Electric shock stops HECO worker’s heart
A 33-year-old Hawaiian Electric Co. employee was taken to a hospital Monday night in serious condition after an electric shock stopped his heart while he was working on an overhead power line.
The incident occurred at 11:11 p.m. at Kamehameha Highway and McGrew Loop in Aiea. The man’s co-workers used an automated defibrillator three times and performed CPR to keep him alive until paramedics arrived, according to an Emergency Medical Services report.
Paramedics said he was awake on the way to the hospital.
Maui man, 35, is accused of dealing meth
A 35-year-old Maui man was arrested Monday after being indicted on charges of dealing methamphetamine.
John Ng of Hana was arrested at 3:25 p.m. in Hana on charges of first-degree attempted methamphetamine trafficking, second-degree methamphetamine trafficking and two other drug offenses. He was being held at Maui Community Correctional Center on Tuesday in lieu of $150,000 bail.
Lt. William Hankins, Hana District commander, praised the community for alerting police to Ng’s activities. He said Ng was arrested earlier this year, at which time officers allegedly found a significant amount of drugs on him. Through the investigation, police determined he was dealing drugs.
Fire in condo injures man and kills pets
A cooking fire injured a man and killed two cats in a condominium Monday night in South Maui, firefighters said.
The fire began at about 9:25 p.m. on Wailea Ekolu Place after cooking materials were left unattended on a stove, said Maui Fire Department spokesman Edward Taomoto.
Firefighters arrived to find flames and smoke coming from the first floor of a two-story building. Inside, firefighters found an unresponsive 56-year-old man in the bedroom and revived him. He was taken to a hospital and was last reported to be in stable condition.
Three people living in the unit were displaced. The fire caused $550,000 in damage, which includes $150,000 in damage to the unit above.
