Both lanes of Kamehameha Highway near Kaaawa are open again after work crews finished the latest repairs to the roadway there, state transportation officials said today.
The Windward highway’s makai (northbound) lane had been closed after heavy surf caused the shoulder to collapse last weekend. The collapsed area was about 100 feet south of another section that also collapsed due to heavy surf on Feb. 11.
The latest crews finished their work a day earlier than expected, but they’ll also have to return at a later date to remove sandbags from the area, according to a Department of Transportation release.
In a statement, DOT Director Ford Fuchigami thanked the city, the Army Corps of Engineers and the state’s contractor, Delta Construction Corporation, for help on the work.
“This repair will help protect the area from future erosion as we continue to pursue solutions to preserve our coastal roadways,” Fuchigami said.
