UH baseball beats West Virginia in series opener
Brendan Hornung tossed seven shutout innings and Jacob Sheldon-Collins drove in two runs for Hawaii in a 4-1 victory over West Virginia to open a four-game series at Les Murakami Stadium tonight.
Hornung (2-2) allowed four hits with one walk and struck out six to earn the win for the Rainbow Warriors (5-5), who have won three of their last four.
West Virginia starter Chad Donato, who hadn’t walked a batter in his first two starts, gave up three runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings with five walks and seven strikeouts to take the loss for the Mountaineers (5-2).
West Virginia had its five-game winning streak snapped and trailed in a game for the first time since its season opener against Charleston Southern.
Jackson Cramer singled in Darius Hill, who doubled, with two outs in the eighth inning for WVU’s lone run.
Alex Sawelson and Josh Rojas hit back-to-back singles with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to put runners on the corners.
Rojas got caught off first on a pickoff play, but freshman Kobi Candaroma, who pinch-ran for Sawelson, took off for home. WVU tried to get the out at the plate, but Candaroma beat the throw to steal home for a 4-1 lead.
Cody Culp pitched the final two innings and struck out three to earn his second save.
The series continues Friday night at 6:35.
