A 44-year-old man suffered critical injuries after he was hit by a car while walking in traffic in Kihei Tuesday night, Maui police said.

The man was walking against traffic in the northbound lane of South Kihei Road when he was hit by an oncoming 2014 Ford sedan driven by a San Mateo, Calif., woman, police said.

The incident happened about 7 p.m. near Ala Koa Street.

Paramedics took the Wailea man to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition, police said. The driver was not hurt.
