On the morning he introduced Eran Ganot as the University of Hawaii men’s basketball coach last year, athletic director David Matlin spent the rest of the day trying to hold on to his women’s basketball coach.
“I’m glad Laura (Beeman) stayed,” Matlin would say with palpable relief later. Just a month into his position, Matlin said, “I wasn’t looking forward to another coaching search so soon. Let me get settled into this job first.”
Eleven months later Matlin has two conference-championship-winning coaches, and while he exults in their net cutting, it is look-over-your-shoulder time.
Matlin declined to say Monday if any schools have asked to talk to his coaches, but be assured he is not oblivious to jobs that come open at more well-heeled institutions these days.
He might sleep well, but there are certain area codes that would send a chill up the spine should they pop up on his cellphone in the next few weeks.
With three consecutive Women’s NIT trips Beeman was a finalist for the Utah job last year and an NCAA Tournament berth this year can only serve to raise her attractiveness for some school looking for a fresh start.
Given what she has accomplished in a short time at UH and the way she has gone about it, it isn’t hard to see some Power Five Conference school with abundant resources taking an interest in Beeman.
The good news, to this point at least, is that there is only one Pac-12 job opening, Colorado. The Buffaloes are looking to replace Linda Lappe, who went 105-92 in six years but only 39-68 in conference.
Lappe was said to have deal worth $245,830 this year, a sum that, thanks to Pac-12 TV bucks, UH would be hard pressed to come close to should CU come knocking, checkbook in hand.
The 33-year-old Ganot has a 27-5 record and, now, an NCAA berth, pretty good résumé builders for a rookie head coach. There is also the matter of the 2016-17 postseason ban hanging over the program, pending the appeal.
While a Power Five school would be unlikely to take a look at a first-year head coach yet to demonstrate his recruiting prowess, you could see some attraction in, say, the West Coast Conference. The WCC being Ganot’s old neighborhood from having spent time (2010-15) as an assistant at Saint Mary’s.
And, as circumstance would have it, there are three jobs open in the WCC — Santa Clara, San Francisco and Pacific — all paying beyond Ganot’s current $225,000 base salary.
UOP is probably a non-starter since it has its own NCAA issues and, even without sanctions, is a tough place to win in a conference that has Gonzaga, Brigham Young and Saint Mary’s.
Santa Clara and USF each paid its most recent head coaches in excess of $380,000.
While the coaching carousel gets going, we’re told Matlin is looking at sweetening the deals — within UH’s limited resources, of course. Which could mean a two-year contract extension and slight bump for each.
Not to mention an AD’s gratitude, if he doesn’t have to convene another search for a while.
