Chicago State shuts out baseball ‘Bows
Andy Gertonson singled home Julian Russell with one out in the top of the ninth inning and Chicago State beat Hawaii 1-0 tonight in the opener of a four-game series at Les Murakami Stadium.
Brendan Hornung (2-4) worked a career-high 8 1/3 innings and gave up an unearned run when Russell reached on an error by Johnny Weeks.
Weeks started at shortstop for Jacob Sheldon-Collins, who had the flu.
Gertonson then singled under the glove of Weeks to give the Cougars (5-10) the lead.
Hawaii (6-12) suffered its sixth straight loss and was held to two hits. The Rainbow Warriors were 0-for-10 with runners on base and didn’t score despite nine walks by Cougars pitchers.
Zach Thomas (2-0) worked the final two innings to earn the win in relief of Jake Perkins, who gave up two hits in seven innings and struck out eight with six walks allowed.

Hornung had a career-high eight strikeouts and allowed five hits.
