A crew worked to clear a fallen tree on S. Beretania Street this morning. Police closed off the section of Beretania between Punahou Street and Kalakaua Avenue after the tree and utility poles collapsed.

Downed tress and utility poles temporarily closed South Beretania Street this morning between Punahou Street to Kalakaua Avenue, leaving 30 customers in the Makiki area without electrical power.

Three westbound lanes on South Beretania Street were reopened at 8 a.m.

Firefighters responded to a downed tree report at 1212 South Beretania St. at the Banyan Tree Plaza at 6:30 a.m.

As usual the slightest breeze and HECO’s cheap matchstick utility poles fall like dominoes. Can’t afford to install permanent steal or reinforced concrete poles as Japan does (During typhoons their poles do not come down). Have to ensure HECO management bureaucrats get their undeserved bonuses and pay raises.

Well, you need to throw in HawTel and Oceanic as also contributing to the matchstick syndrome. Think they and other utilities contribute to the overloading of these poles. Shared use, nicht wahr?

    • Derick says:

Looks like the the tree branch broke and fell onto the utility lines. I can see the utility poles in the picture and they are still standing upright on the left and right of the tree branch. If any poles did fall, it was probably the tree branch and not the wind that caused it to fall.

Not surprised some pieces of those banyans fell down. Been expecting it for years.

Kudos to the efficient folks who did their jobs so well and quickly. HECO hires good people and manages them well.
