Hawaii island fire ignited by woodburning stove

A woodburning stove was found to be the cause of a house fire early this morning in Honaunau, the Hawaii County Fire Department reported.

Firefighters were dispatched at 1:31 a.m. to a coffee farm lot about half a mile above Highway 11 on Rabbit Hill Road.

Firefighters found the concrete and wood structure fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. Nine fire units and 16 personnel were dispatched.

The single occupant was able to get out safely. He told fire personnel that the fire was caused by a woodburning stove that had tipped over.

Access was limited due to the narrow road and low tree branches, but the fire was kept from spreading to nearby trees and brush.

After multiple water shuttles, the fire was under control at 2:30 a.m. and extinguished at 5 a.m.
