Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of two fires that destroyed a bathroom at Keehi Lagoon Park and a shed near a home in Waipahu today.

The bathroom room fire was reported at 11:17 p.m. Tuesday night and was brought under control at 11:25 p.m.

Firefighters were recalled at 5:25 a.m. today when smoke was reported coming from the public bathroom. There was no immediate estimate of damage caused by the fire.

At 2:33 a.m. today, 31 firefighters were called to a home on Kipou Street and discovered a storage shack adjacent to the home on fire.

Twelve people were home when the fire was reported and were evacuated from the home after neighbors alerted them to the emergency. No injuries were reported. Firefighters managed to keep the fire away from the interior of the home.

The fire was brought under control at 2:41 a.m.

Damage was estimated at $11,000 to exterior of the house and $2,000 to the contents of the shed.

Though there were smoke alarms in the home, they were not activated due to the exterior location of the fire.

However, fire officials encourage residents to install one in each bedroom, sleeping area and on every level in the home.

Statistics show that working smoke alarms in homes can substantially reduce the risk of fire death in residential fires. Smoke alarms are a very important part of fire safety in the home. They alert occupants of smoke and fire 24 hours a day. Properly installed, working smoke alarms increase a person’s chances of survival in a fire by 50 percent.

Approximately 67 percent of fatal house fires on Oahu had no working smoke alarms, a fire official said.
