Hawaii volleyball defeats UC Irvine in five

Freshman opposite Stijn van Tilburg had a career-high 27 kills and senior hitter Siki Zarkovic tied his with 25 as No. 8 Hawaii clinched the final Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball tournament playoff berth with a dramatic, 23-25, 25-27, 26-24, 25-23, 15-11 victory over No. 14 UC Irvine tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Junior hitter Kupono Fey added 12 kills for the Rainbow Warriors (14-9, 9-9 MPSF) when defeating the Anteaters for a second night in five sets. It was the first time since 2010 that Hawaii had defeated UCI (8-17, 5-13) twice in a season.

Junior hitter Michael Saeta led the Anteaters with 18 kills and Kyle Russell and Thomas Hodges each had 16 kills for the Anteaters, playing their sixth five-setter in eight matches.

UH freshman setter Joe Worsely had his second consecutive double-double with 59 assists and 10 digs. Zarkovic also finished with a double-double with 13 digs.

    UH found a way to win–faced 1 match point but kept playing and scored critical points when needed. Proud to say that their fight and determination did not cave in–for the program and for these young men–this lesson in perseverance and sustaining maximum effort will payoff in the future both on and off the court. Go BOWS!

    They won’t go far in the playoffs but at least the long season is almost over.
