Hawaii island police have charged a 30-year-old Hilo man in connection with the theft of a tractor and trailer from a Makaala Street business on Wednesday.
The suspect, Soloman Aloha Kepano, was charged Friday with first-degree theft, fourth-degree theft, third-degree criminal property damage, four counts of second-degree reckless endangering, five counts of accidents involving damage to vehicle or property, and two counts of accidents involving damage to unattended vehicle or property.
According to police, witnesses saw the tractor and trailer run through a closed gate, strike a vehicle, run another vehicle off the road on Pilipaa Street, and strike and sever a utility pole. The tractor and trailer continued on, eventually veering off the road and striking a residence.
Witnesses allegedly saw Kepano walking away from the scene and detained him until police arrived.
Kepano’s bail was set at $9,100.
