Welcome to the new phase of TheBuzz!

This column, which originated in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin in March 2001, has migrated from the business section to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s new Crave section. My focus will be on restaurants, the broader food service industry, chefs and other isle folk who live to make people happy through food. Let’s begin …

Kahuku High School grad and chef Kaimana Chee, now working in the Washington, D.C., area, will be in many a local home Sunday at 5 p.m. on Food Network’s “Guy’s Grocery Games.” He is one of four chefs eliminated early in previous episodes invited back for a “Redemption Tournament.” They’ll likely have to employ alchemy to turn German chocolate cake ingredients into some sort of dinner, then will be challenged to make a cheesy dish using only products whose prices start with the number 3. The final round will have the chefs prepare dishes informed by familiar family flavors but also featuring odd ingredients from the food pyramid. The episode’s top chef wins a chance at a $20,000 prize and a spot in the finale. …

The Little Oven has closed after seven years in business, with owner Joyce Harada making the “hard decision” to give up her Friday and Saturday night dessert business.

The closure was due “mostly to financial reasons, but also my health,” she said. Harada focused on local, organic products for making her desserts, which were a twist on “classic desserts that people have grown up with,” like peach cobbler, brownie fluff and Meyer lemon ume kanten parfait with homemade sorbet, fruit and berries.

While her dessert catering business is on hold at the moment, Harada would one day like to offer consulting services to restaurants or other food service industry clients.

Meanwhile, Abraham Jazmin’s Sammies by Ho‘oku‘i has taken over the space at 1467 S. King St. full time, offering hot gourmet hoagie sandwiches for lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays. …

Bakery &Table restaurant at South King and Piikoi streets has a new general manager, Brent Yamate, a 20-year veteran of the food and beverage industry. Yamate has worked at two California locations of the Cheesecake Factory, as a manager at Morimoto Waikiki and as a server at Ruth’s Chris Steak House as well as at Azure. Bakery &Table operates four locations in Japan. The Honolulu location, in the old Sub-Zero/Wolf showroom, is the first in the U.S., and there are plans for another at the former Crouching Lion Inn in Kaaawa, opening next year.
