A former volunteer at the Boys &Girls Club of Hawaii’s Kauai facility is accused of sexually assaulting two young girls.
Eirik James Stevens, 49, a former volunteer with the Boys &Girls Club of Hawaii Lihue Clubhouse, has been charged with first-degree sexual assault, attempted third-degree sexual assault and third-degree sexual assault. The charges involve two girls, ages 7 and 8.
The Lihue man pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Friday before Kauai District Per Diem Judge Joseph Kobayashi. A preliminary hearing is set for Tuesday.
The assaults allegedly occurred on two occasions in February and March while Stevens was a volunteer with the nonprofit organization. Stevens is being held in custody in lieu of $250,000 bail.
The girls are members of the Boys and Girls Club. Police arrested Stevens on Tuesday at his apartment at Lihue Court Townhomes.
On March 21 Stevens allegedly invited the 7-year-old girl into his apartment sometime after 4 p.m. He undressed her and sexually assaulted her, according to a court document.
Stevens volunteered in gardening activities with the children in the after-school program at the Lihue clubhouse, which is at 4193 Hardy St.
In the other incident, a parent reported to police that Stevens had allegedly inappropriately touched her 8-year-old daughter. Sometime between Feb. 14 and March 21, the victim was sitting on a stool tending to a garden when Stevens allegedly approached her.
Police said he allegedly rubbed her inner right thigh near the groin area. The girl pushed his hand away and moved away from him. Stevens allegedly followed her and again sat next to her and rubbed her thigh. Police said the girl pushed his hand away and then walked away.
The court document said Stevens sold Kool-Aid packets and often passed out snacks and candy to neighborhood children. Stevens previously gave snacks and candy to both girls.
In response to the allegations, the organization has barred Stevens from volunteering.
In an e-mailed statement, Tim Motts, Boys &Girls Club of Hawaii’s president and chief executive officer, said, “All employees and volunteers of the Boys &Girls Club of Hawaii must undergo a thorough criminal background check, and we have a zero tolerance policy for inappropriate and illegal behavior on part of any staff member, volunteer or club member in our organization.”
Stevens has no criminal record in Hawaii.
Anyone with additional information about the case and Stevens is asked to call police dispatch at 241-1711 or CrimeStoppers at 246-8300.
