Eastbound lanes of Kapiolani Blvd. reopen after truck smashes traffic signal
A pickup truck that crashed into a utility pole in the University area overnight forced the closure of three eastbound lanes of Kapiolani Boulevard for nearly three hours while work crews made repairs.
Police reported, just after noon, that all eastbound lanes of Kapiolani Blvd. at the intersection with University Avenue have been reopened.
The crash occurred around 12:30 a.m. along Kapiolani Boulevard at the intersection with University Avenue. The driver subsequently fled on foot, but police caught him at Ala Wai Community Park nearby, according to a witness.
No serious injuries were reported.
In addition to damaging the traffic signal, the crash took out cable and internet service for some customers in the area. Electrical service was not affected.

“Fright and Flight”(?) Was the car stolen? Is the car “Registered”? I don’t think his Insurance Carrier will be re-insuring him…
sadly many locals cannot control cars with engines and wheels on them. Better just to park their cars and walk.
would it be better if we had a rail system for locals so they don’t have to drive?
This would mean locals would have the money to buy a ticket, know how to buy a ticket, get on rail, act like a professional rider (Showered, clean clothing, helpful, friendly) not hog a handicapped seat, and actually get off at correct stop. Really?
Somethings up when they run! Nothin good about it
At that time of night–what do you think??? I don’t know the law–on a DUI, do you have to be caught behind the wheel? Maybe that’s why he ran???
Drunk or either on drugs. No license and registration? Share the whole story.
i hope da guy neva get beer in da ear syndrome
He ran to the nearest restroom, but alas there were none.
He was just following the tried and tested examples of certain elected bureaucrats who pulled similar stunts. Then later on refused to talk about their willful personal failure. Said they had “Moved on.” All losers.
Can you say former State House Vice Speaker Jon Riki Karamatsu’s first DUI back in 2007? Remember back in 2008 when State Sen. Ron Menor pleaded no contest for DUI with his minor son in the vehicle?
And lets not forget in Aug 2015 when a high-ranking American officials of the Roman Catholic Church was arrested for drunken driving in Kailua-Kona. The Most Eminent Cardinal William Joseph Levada, 79, of Menlo Park, Calif., was stopped at about midnight Thursday on Hina Lani Street and charged with DUI.
Ahhhh how the mighty do fall from grace. Book’em Danno.
good point
“Officer, I wasn’t running away, …really, I was just looking for a first aid station and a pay phone to call my mom to come and pick me up…..really, I no lie to you, for real”
