Collaboration melds science, dance moves

Dance meets science in Shazam! — a collaborative effort by arts and science professors at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

The program features nine dances that demonstrate scientific ideas and principles through dance, said Betsy Fisher, a UH dance professor who directed the program. Fisher and fellow UH dance professor Gregg Lizenberry created a work that demonstrates torque.

“We collaborated with people in engineering here at UH,” Fisher said. “We’re actually using an accelerometer onstage, so as the accelerometer moves, it shows visually the force that is being used, and that is projected over the site.”

The show will be presented as a science class led by a “mad professor” assisted by group of assistants dressed steampunk style, performing to choreography by local artist Yukie Shiroma.

A work by New York-based choreographer Jody Oberfelder will illustrate the way neurons connect and communicate, Fisher said. “It involves some audience participation.” Oberfelder formerly drew public interest in the connection between art and science with her 2015 work “Brain Piece,” described as a union of movement, film, neuroscience and sound that symbolizes “the ‘dance’ that continually takes place inside our heads.”

Hip-hop trio to drop its beats at Republik

Bring your bling when Migos rolls into town.

Known individually as Quavo, Takeoff and Offset, the Migos grew up together near Atlanta, listening to performers like Goodie Mob, Outkast and Gucci Mane.

The rap trio had a smash hit with their debut single, “Versace,” landing on several “best of 2013” lists with a tune that uses the rapid-fire repetition of the high-fashion label’s name as a motif for wealth.

Described by The New York Times as “a pile of gleeful boasting,” the song caught the ear of Justin Bieber, who did a lip-sync version of the song, and boxing welterwight champion Adrien Broner, who used it in his music video. Several fellow rappers have done remixes, including Drake, who did the official remix, incorporating into it the Migos’ hit “Hannah Montana,” a rather raunchy tune that apparently is a reaction to Miley Cyrus’ twerking.

The members of Migos are related — Quavo is Takeoff’s uncle and Offset is Quavo’s cousin. They’ve stayed together through some challenging times — drug-related arrests before a concert in Georgia last year, and an extended period in jail for Offset on drug and weapon charges — to produce the well-received album “Yung Rich Nation” last year, which debuted at No. 3 on Billboard’s rap charts.

‘Iolani blasts off

The private institution’s annual fair adopts a futuristic theme

Beam your way to ‘Iolani School this weekend for its 25th annual fair. This year’s theme is “Race to Space,” with food and game booths decorated with futuristic themes.

Space cadets young and old will find plenty of fun: E.K. Fernandez rides, games and a petting zoo, along with cooking demonstrations and gourmet food for the older crowd. Get some shopping in, too, with the fair’s Marketplace offering items like homemade jams and jellies, cookies and kim chee, and a Chic Boutique where bargains on vintage clothing can be had. Plants, quilts and other crafts will be on sale.

Entertainment includes appearances by musicians Kawika Kahiapo (4 p.m. today), Blayne Asing (7:30 p.m. today) and Elvis impersonator Leo Days (9 p.m. today). Saturday’s bill features Hawaii MusicWorks (12:30 p.m.), Paul Shimomoto (4:30 p.m.) and Cory Oliveros (6 p.m). ‘Iolani students will also strut their stuff in two talent shows, with grades K-7 students performing at 5:30 p.m. today and grade 8-12 students performing at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Meet your heroes’ maker as Stan Lee comes to town

Stan Lee, creator of Spider-Man, Iron Man, the Hulk, Thor and many other comic book superheroes, returns to Honolulu this weekend for a series of appearances.

With artist Jack Kirby, Lee created a stable of popular characters who were known not only for their superpowers, but also for their often troubled lives as private individuals. Lee headed Marvel Comics for decades and, at age 93, remains deeply involved in its affairs, writing for and producing many of its films and television spinoffs. He’s also appeared in cameo roles for many of them, most recently in 2015’s “Ant-Man.”

Lee appears today at a 7 p.m. panel discussion at the Hawai‘i Convention Center, and organizers are promising to premiere “something very exclusive” at that time. (Maybe a preview of the next superhero flick, or even a new superhero?) Prizes will be raffled off.
