“Project Runway All Stars” Season 5
Episode 10 recap: “Rebel With a Cause”
This week the designers were introduced to Yvonne Niami, founder of N:Philanthropy, a brand that funnels 10 percent of its net sales to fighting pediatric cancer. The designers were tasked with creating a “fashion-forward summer look that is sophisticated with a badass edge” for the N:Phil girl.
Hawaii designer Kini Zamora took a risk by creating a genie pant that he knew judges would love or hate — but at midpoint in the competition, he did not want to risk playing it safe.
His original plan also called for a cropped yellow tweed jacket, but mentor Zanna Roberts Rassi told him she wanted to see “less disco banana, more sophisticated cool girl.”
Zamora had the sense of humor to laugh at the critique, and said he didn’t want to create a disco banana either.
He decided to dip-dye the bottom half of his jacket black to tone down the yellow, but at the last minute he ditched the jacket and sent his model down the runway in the pant and a halter top. The judges liked the “kookiness” and “ballsiness” of his design. His risk-taking paid off and he was placed in the top two along with Emily Payne, who was named the winner.
Ken Laurence struggled with creating a top to go with a white pair of pants. At the last minute, he gave up and draped a piece of fabric as a halter top. It was so thrown together that I felt he would surely be sent home, but it was Dom Streater and Asha Daniels who ended up at the bottom.
Both their looks were too heavy-looking for the summer challenge, but it was obvious that they both put a lot more work into their designs than Laurence. Unfortunately, Daniels ended up going home.
