Plumbing work apparently sparks fire in Mililani townhouse

Fire investigators believe a plumber working with a blowtorch unintentionally set a fire in a Mililani townhouse Monday, causing $85,000 worth of damages.

The fire was reported at 12:12 p.m. at Kahikinui Court.

Firefighters found a smouldering fire within the wall space of a two-story, four-unit townhouse.

The fire was brought under control at 1:20 p.m. and fully extinguished by 2:57 p.m.

In addition to the plumber, one other person was in the unit when the fire broke out.

All persons were able to evacuate safely and no injuries were reported.

A total of three people from two of the townhouse units were displaced by the fire and will stay with friends and family. The American Red Cross was not requested for this incident.

Plumbers can be a real nightmare – be careful who you call.

This reminds me of a story I heard about a plumber who hired a contractor to build his new home. The contractor was building the home and the plumber came by after hours to do the plumbing work. The story goes on to say the plumber was working late before leaving. Well, during the night a smoldering stud caught fire and the whole house burned down. Remember, a torch can join pieces of pipe together, but that same torch can begin a fire in an adjacent stud. Be careful out there.
