Eight people were displaced after a fire damaged a ground-floor patio area of a four-unit apartment building in Waianae Wednesday night, causing $43,500 worth of damage.

The fire was reported at 11:34 p.m. at the Garden Grove Apartment complex on Farrington Highway. It took 32 firefighters less than 10 minutes to bring the fire under control at 11:49 p.m.

No one was in the unit when the fire was reported and no functioning smoke alarms were present.

Eight people from two of the building’s units were displaced by the fire and will be staying with friends and family.

Occupants of the four-unit apartment building were alerted to the fire by the sound of breaking glass and the odor of smoke. All of the building’s occupants were able to evacuate without injury.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
