Cal State Fullerton sweeps UH softball team
Cal State Fullerton pitchers Desiree Ybarra and Sydney Golden combined to hold the University of Hawaii softball team to a single run in today’s Big West doubleheader and the Titans completed a series sweep of the Rainbow Wahine.
Ybarra threw 6 2/3 shutout innings in Cal State Fullerton’s 7-1 win in today’s opening game at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Golden then blanked the Wahine in the finale and the league-leading Titans extended their winning streak to 13 with a 2-0 victory.
Cal State Fullerton (38-10, 12-0 Big West) opened the doubleheader by sending 10 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning and took command with a four-run outburst. Samantha Vandiver opened the game with a triple into the left-field corner and beat the throw to the plate on Missy Taukeiaho’s grounder to second.
After two looping hits fell in to load the bases, Courtney Rodriguez chopped a grounder to shortstop and the throw to the plate was wild, allowing two runs to score. Sydney Colenzo followed with an RBI single to give the Titans a 4-0 lead.
That was more than enough for Ybarra, who struck out six and walked one while allowing seven hits. She was one out away from the shutout when UH senior Keiki Carlos homered in the bottom of the seventh to score UH’s lone run of the afternoon.
Golden, who earned the win in Friday’s series opener, then held UH (20-5, 4-8) to four hits while improving to 16-3.
