Firefighters mop up after a fire this morning at Serg’s Mexican Kitchen in Waimanalo.

A fire caused $60,000 worth of damage to a Waimanalo restaurant’s kitchen this morning.

When eight companies arrived at 5:55 a.m. they saw black smoke coming from the kitchen of Serg’s Mexican Kitchen on Kalanianaole Highway.

The Honolulu Fire Department said the fire was accidental and started after an electrical warning appliance was left on overnight and ignited nearby combustibles.

Police briefly diverted traffic on the highway from about 6:15 a.m. to 7:05 a.m. The fire was brought under control at 6:03 a.m.

The initial fire damage estimate was $80,000 but has been reevaluated to $40,000 to the structure and $20,000 to its contents.

No injuries were reported.
