Austin Matautia’s intense spikes didn’t dent the wooden floor, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if they caused some bruising on the arms of the Mililani Trojans on Thursday night.
Matautia’s high-flying antics started early and continued throughout Moanalua’s 25-22, 25-19, 15-25, 25-18 victory for the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I boys volleyball championship at the Radford gym.
A senior who is committed to the University of Hawaii next season, Matautia delivered 32 kills to give Na Menehune (14-0) their sixth league title in a row. They’re hoping this is the season they can push to a state title in the tournament that has been owned by Interscholastic League of Honolulu teams every season since 1980.
“Tonight gave us a lot of confidence,” Matautia said. “Mililani is a huge team and they’re a powerhouse. Beating them shows how good our serving and passing was.”
Both teams are headed to the D-I states next week.
“They’re hungrier than ever,” said Na Menehune coach Alan Cabanting about his team, which has made it only as far as the semifinals.
For anyone who thinks Mililani (12-1) didn’t have upset on its collective mind, think again. The Trojans showed they were ready and gave a supreme effort with a thundering crowd behind them. Isaac Liva came as close as he could to matching Matautia on the kill-o-meter, putting away a team-high 20, and all of the Trojans showed a pack mentality and built their impressive third-set comeback with the help of back- and hand-slapping emotion.
Kamalu Kaaa sparked that dominant third set for the Trojans, with six of his 14 kills.
“We couldn’t get into a rhythm with our passing,” Mililani coach John Ing said. “It broke down in the first and second sets. In the third set, it finally came into play, but it broke down again in the fourth. Moanalua’s passing was way better than ours, and Austin is awesome. We tried to slow him down because we knew we weren’t going to stop him.”
That third-set lull suffered by Na Menehune didn’t last long. They went immediately to work early in the fourth and deciding set. Matautia’s four early kills, followed by a block and four kills by Sevi Engleman gave Moanalua commanding leads of 10-2 and 16-9. Na Menehune continued on to the finish line and crossed it, thanks to Matautia’s 32nd kill.
The opening set was tied six times before Moanalua started to pull away at 14-13. Led by the setting of Zach Miyamoto (37 assists), Matautia had kills for three of the last four points for a 1-0 match lead.
After breaking a 7-7 tie, it was all Moanalua in the second set. Engleman’s block got it to set point and Matautia delivered on the next ball for the 2-0 edge.
Setter Zavier Lieb (34 assists) added fuel to Mililani’s third-set win, distributing to Kaaa and Liva, forcing Na Menehune to take a look in the mirror and decide how they were going to come out in the fourth.
Engleman finished with 12 kills for Moanalua, and Sila Fuiava had 11 for Mililani.
“We have a tendency to start slow,” the Trojans’ Liva said. “And when we got down, we were down on ourselves. We’ve got to learn how to keep each other up.”
