Chef and restaurateur Ed Kenney has opened his first restaurant in Waikiki and fourth restaurant overall.
Mahina & Sun’s opened Thursday at Surfjack Hotel & Swim. It is open for grab-and-go breakfast service from 6:30 to 11:30 a.m. and dinner service from 5:30 to 10 p.m., seven days a week. Its hours eventually will expand.
“At Mahina & Sun’s we strive to provide locals and visitors alike with food and a dining experience that is fresh and new but also very comforting and rooted in nostalgia,” Kenney said.
The restaurant’s Portuguese bean soup is a more modern take on the classic. It contains meaty borlotti beans instead of canned kidney beans, and its toppings include fresh local watercress, a crisp, soft-boiled egg that’s been breaded in Parmesan cheese and, according to Kenney, “a few glugs of extra-virgin olive oil.”
Signature dishes include Town’s Aku Tartare with risotto, named for one of Kenney’s Kaimuki restaurants, for $13, as well as a Kuahiwi Ranch burger for $18. A family dining option includes a whole 2- to 3-pound opakapaka served with three sauces and several side dishes and dessert.
The restaurant also offers room service options to guests of the hotel, at 412 Lewers St.
Kenney, a four-time James Beard Award semifinalist, also owns Mud Hen Water, Kaimuki Superette and Town, in Kaimuki.
Eurozone economy regains size of 2008
LONDON >> The eurozone economy is finally back to the size it was before the global financial crisis.
The 19-country currency union, which as a bloc is the world’s second-largest economy, enjoyed an unexpected acceleration in the first three months of the year, expanding by a quarterly rate of 0.6 percent, official figures showed Friday.
That means the economy is now bigger than it was at the start of 2008, before the financial crisis triggered the deepest global recession since World War II. However, the region still has far to go to heal fully.
Oculus Rift delays sour virtual-reality hype
LOS ANGELES >> Virtual reality isn’t immune to the problems that arise in practical reality. Just ask would-be fans of the Oculus Rift headset, many of whom are still waiting for their $600 gadgets to arrive — four weeks after they started shipping.
The delay has sparked online grousing and even the creation of a crowdsourced spreadsheet for tracking who received their prized VR gear and when. Some longtime supporters of Oculus have declared themselves alienated by the company’s inability to deliver; others have defected to rival VR systems or are at least considering it.
Exxon, Chevron suffer with oil price slump
DALLAS >> Motorists are saving billions on cheaper gasoline, but the long slump in oil prices is taking a heavy toll on companies that find and produce crude.
Exxon Mobil posted its smallest quarterly profit in more than 16 years Friday, while Chevron lost $725 million, its worst showing since 2002. Chevron also raised the number of jobs it expects to cut this year to 8,000 from 7,000. Other oil companies are expected to report weak earnings.
