University of Hawaii’s Nikki Taylor bumped the ball during during the match against USC at the Aloha Invitational tournament held in Waikiki on April 23.

Fifth-seeded Hawaii advanced at today’s NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship with a 3-0 win over fourth-seeded UCLA at Gulf Shores, Ala.

The Rainbow Wahine (17-8) won at flights 2, 3 and 5 to clinch the dual and beat the Bruins (18-7) for the first time in three meetings this season. Winning their flights were Nikki Taylor-Ka’iwi Schucht, at No. 2, 21-11, 22-20; Ginger Long-Mikayla Tucker at No. 3, 22-20, 21-14, and Ari Homayun-Hannah Rooks at No. 5, 21-18, 21-18.

The other two flights were halted without being finished since Hawaii already had clinched the best-of-five dual. Both of the earlier losses this season to the UCLA had been 3-2.

Hawaii will face top-seeded Florida State (30-1) later today at 10 a.m. Hawaii time in a winners bracket semifinal (televised live on TruTV OC 119) The winner of that match advances directly into the championship final on Sunday.

The Seminoles defeated Stetson 3-0 earlier today. Florida State’s lone loss of the year came to the SandBows at the Stetson Invitational in March 4-1.

Fantastic! Overall, UH has very good women’s athletic program with volleyball, basketball, softball, waterpolo, and others fielding very competitive teams. For the naysayers who dismiss UH athletics as an unnecessary “entertainment” waste of money, tell that to all the fine young women student-athletes who not only excel in sports but also academically. Many wouldn’t have the opportunity without the scholarships offered and they do far better as a group then “students” who get academic scholarships. The value UH and society as a whole gets from these student-athletes is superior to the value gotten from just academic scholarships.

Bummer UH was 2-0 on FS and lost 3-2.
