Campbell lived up to the billing and then some Friday night at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
The Sabers, who are ranked 104th in the nation, proved for the second year in a row that they’re No. 1 in Hawaii with a 12-2 victory over Kapolei in the Division I final of the DataHouse/HHSAA Girls Softball State Championships.
That national ranking was as high as No. 12 before Campbell (18-1) stumbled against the very same Hurricanes in the OIA title game late last month. That 6-5 loss was the team’s only blemish.
Campbell’s Jocelyn Alo continued her torrid pace at the plate and pitcher Dani Cervantes kept up her end of the bargain with a three-hitter. Alo got things started with a two-run homer in a three-run first inning and she finished the tournament 7-for-9 with eight RBIs.
“To be champions, to come out on top, it’s an unbelievable feeling,” Alo said. “I absolutely love my team. I couldn’t imagine being on a better team. I’m so happy.”
Only four runners got as far as second base off of Cervantes, who went 3-0 in the tournament. She only struck out four (a far cry from the 17 she fanned in the quarterfinals), but she kept Kapolei off the board through four innings in the game that ended after six due to the 10-run mercy rule.
“Dani and Jocelyn, I hope there’s two (MVPs),” Campbell head coach Michael Hermosura said before the awards ceremony, when it was announced that Alo was the most outstanding player and Cervantes was chosen to the all-tournament team. “It was a fun ride. I’m glad they came out on top for the hard work that they put in for our school. It’s what they deserve.”
After Alo’s first-inning blast, Elisa Favela doubled and scored on Darien Robinson’s single for a quick 3-0 lead. Two Kapolei errors and Sierra Mariano’s RBI infield hit led to two more Campbell runs in the third for a 5-0 count.
“We were the visiting team, so I knew it was important that we jump on it early and get ahead,” Hermosura said. “You never know what Kapolei is going to come up with, especially after (Thursday) night (when the Hurricanes rallied back from a 5-1 deficit for a 6-5 win over Pearl City in the semifinals).”
In a three-run fourth inning, Alo connected for a two-run triple as the Sabers boosted their lead to 8-0. Then, Chardonnay Pantastico’s RBI double was the big hit in Campbell’s two-run fifth for a 10-0 score that served notice to Kapolei that the end, via the mercy rule, could be near.
The mercy rule didn’t go into effect after five innings, however, because the Hurricanes (15-4) enjoyed a mini eruption to make it 10-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Holiday Ribac was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on the Sabers’ only error. Then, Shaycelynn Ho‘ohuli beat out a bunt, stole a base and came home on Ciena Kauhi’s double.
“I just thought we had a magical run through the season,” said Kapolei head coach Tony Saffery, whose Hurricanes did not get a runner on base in the sixth. “Today with Campbell … they were just overwhelming. One through nine can crush at any given time, and when we were expecting crush, they would drop bunts on us. Coach Shag did an awesome job and kept our defense off balance.”
In the first inning, Nikki Corla’s diving catch in the right-center alley for the third out prevented at least one Hurricanes runner, possibly two, from scoring and kept their rivals from picking up steam. Corla also drove in Campbell’s final two runs in the top of the sixth with a base-hit to left.
