Hawaii surfers Dusty Payne and John John Florence advanced to the quarterfinals of the Oi Rio Pro in Rio de Janeiro.
Payne won his nonelimination heat on Wednesday with a score of 15.60 to edge Florence (15.20) and defending champion Filipe Toledo (10.40) of Brazil. Florence remained in contention by defeating Brazil’s Caio Ibelli in their round 5 heat. Florence totaled 13.00 points to Ibelli’s 10.17.
HPU, BYUH tennis teams win
The third-ranked Hawaii Pacific men’s tennis team defeated No. 4 Lander 5-1 on Wednesday at the NCAA Division II Championship in Denver.
The Sharks (18-3) won two of the three doubles matches and three singles matches, led by Thibaud Berland’s 6-4, 6-2 win over Chris Devoize at No. 1 singles. HPU will play No. 8 Valdosta State (18-6) in today’s quarterfinals.
Top-ranked BYU-Hawaii rallied for a 5-2 win over No. 9 Columbus State in the women’s bracket. BYUH (23-0) lost two of the doubles matches before winning four singles matches. Jade Griffin won 6-1, 7-6 at No. 6 singles to clinch the match for the Seasiders, who face No. 12 St. Mary’s (21-3) in the quarterfinals.
The seventh-ranked HPU women defeated No. 11 Northeastern State 5-0. Lorena Gheorghe won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles to clinch the match for the Sharks (17-5), who face No. 15 Cameron (23-3) in the quarterfinals.
BYUH golf tied for 12th
The BYU-Hawaii men’s golf team is tied for 12th after Wednesday’s second round of the NCAA Division II Championship in Denver.
The Seasiders have a team score of 586, 35 strokes behind leader St. Leo. Nicolas Herrera and Federico Clausen both shot 72s and are tied for 36th at 1-over 145.
Bonilla earns regional honor
Hawaii Pacific reliever Brandon Bonilla earned a spot on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s All-West Region first team.
The senior finished the season with 12 saves, which led the PacWest Conference and tied for fourth in the nation. The southpaw struck out 38 over 25 1/3 innings and had a 0.36 ERA and 2-0 record.
