Maui Fire Department responded to a kayaker who drifted away from the shores off West Maui Saturday afternoon.

Around 1:13 p.m., a kayaker called 911 for help saying he couldn’t make it back to shore and was about a half mile away from Ukumehame.

Firefighters arrived at 1:30 p.m. and located the kayaker about 300 yards off Papalaua State Wayside Park with offshore winds up to 30 mph. Crews noticed a nearby private boat and contacted the crew via VHF radio for assistance to pick up the kayaker.

The boat brought the kayaker, a Lahaina man in his 40s, back to Maalaea Harbor at 1:39 p.m. He did not require any medical attention, according to the fire department.
