Dozens of Hawaii schools serving free meals over summer

Free meals will be served to children at around 70 public schools across the Hawaiian islands over the summer.

The Hawaii State Department of Education said today that most participating schools will serve breakfast and lunch on weekdays.

For a school to participate, at least half of its regular students must qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. The school also has to be offering a summer program, but students don’t have to take classes to get the meals.

Assistant Superintendent Dann Carlson says some students miss out on meals over the summer. He says he’s grateful so many schools stepped up to participate this year.

The Department of Education says the program will begin in early June.

Awesome news! If you want to take some money out of my paycheck for this then feel free to do so. Oh you already have. Ummm okay? Can I ask what the children’s parents will be doing towards this effort. Of course I know there are many children who truly need this assistance and I want to pay for it. But here in Hawaii I think there may be very many where this is not the case. It’s really sad, I feel bad for these kids. So many useless parents. The economy and unemployment rates are as good as it gets. Anyone who wants a job can get one.

Yes and we pay for the staff, facilities, utilities and food.

    • soundofreason says:

If they NEED assistance, then their family already HAS food assistance via EBT cards. Just need to get up off their lazy $%# and MAKE a sandwich for THEIR kid!! UNbelievable! And THIS is the school district that complains about budget constraints?

    • sarge22 says:

The students don’t have to take classes to get the meals. It is actually a learning experience for the kids on how to get free food and skip class. Amazing

At least Ike IKEA has a fishing pole to catch his dinner. What is the life lesson we are teaching the homeless. It is not ok to accept hand outs. Go out and earn it.

I’m sorry that you don’t understand how Summer school works. Your comments suggest that you would have attended Summer school a lot.

        • sarge22 says:

Oh great wise one could you kindly explain to us less fortunate how summer school works?

        • klastri says:

sarge22 – It would help if you would start performing the slightest research before writing ridiculous comments. But that’s too much to ask of you, obviously.

Summer school is not mandatory, so many – probably most – of the students who are getting meals do not “skip class.” That’s how it works.

        • sarge22 says:

klastri-I guess I do understand how summer school works and the kids can skip class and get free food. Most of the kids will probably attend class and some will just get free food. That is rather obvious even to you.

I’m certainly glad the State of Hawaii is doing so well financially.

I feel bad for children that don’t get enough to eat. However, free (not for taxpayers) handouts are not the answer. People who aren’t feeding their children need to be reported to “child protective services” and some kind of punishment need to be dealt to these abusive parents. Parents need to be held responsible. Otherwise, it just will continue and escalate so that the taxpayers will be paying to raise every child in Hawaii.

What? Another entitlement? What about the elderly who have to split up a can of Vienna sausage six ways.

  4. Bdpapa says:

Feed ’em and make sure you put a check mark next to parent’s name. Losers!

  5. HOSSANA says:

Sorry to sound so heartless and cruel but providing free meals for children at certain schools is just plain RIDICULOUS!!! Nothing more and nothing less.

  6. Marauders_1959 says:

I’m not against offering “free” school lunches, just not to illegals.
I’m also against allowing illegals to attend “free” schools.

    • klastri says:

Sure, that makes sense. Be sure to prevent any hope of them contributing to the society they find themselves in. Make sure the long term cost is absolutely as high as possible. Great thinking!

      • sarge22 says:

Trump will round up the illegals and send them packing. They will have to climb back over that wall with the ladders only on our side.

        • klastri says:

Mr. Trump is fortunate that so many people are gullible and poorly informed. It’s amazing what his supporters will believe. Amazing and sad.

All you grinch above do understand that this is for the unfortunate kids, right? And that most of you stingy azz grumpy probably pay minimal tax (disable,over65,SS etc) so you have no say. Hey, how did you guys get this way?

    • sarge22 says:

Tired of seeing second and third generation welfare folks working the system. Do you get it???

    • Cellodad says:

(and the labor costs are minimal since school cafeteria workers are 12 month employees. Often, during the summer, those who don’t take vacation are assigned to custodial crews. It is however, necessary to make sure that normal maintenance takes place and that if more extensive repairs are necessary, that Facilities crews have the opportunity to get in and do the work. Once the regular school year begins, cafeterias are very busy places.)

Sounds like a lot of people don’t know how humiliating it is to be singled out because you are poor and hungry…Grow-up ANGRY People! Punishing the innocent children who have weak parents is not the way. And the fool who suggested lunchables and peanut butter sandwiches…WOW you are a genuine okole-puka! I can only hope your years left on this earth are good…I’m sure we won’t see you in Heaven!
