1 woman dead, 1 critically injured after car plunges off Hana Highway
A woman died and another was critically injured this afternoon after the vehicle they were riding in ran off Hana Highway and plunged 200 feet off a cliff.
The incident occurred around 4:42 p.m. in an area fronting St. Peter Catholic Mission, about four miles from Hana, the Maui Fire Department said by email.
The vehicle landed on a lava rock outcropping surrounded by water.
Firefighters pried the women from the vehicle and airlifted them to a designated landing site where paramedics were waiting.
One woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The other woman was transported in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

It’s a very treacherous but beautiful road. Sad to hear one of the ladies lost her life. I hope the other makes it through.
Although scenic with various vista along the way it requires your complete attention! No time to be texing/twitting! Sad when anyone passes, hope the injured makes it.
agree..a lovely but potentially deadly highway. I hope that the second woman recovers.
TV News said witness saw them arguing in the car before it went off the road.
And deliberately drove off the road.
A lovers quarrel.
A clueless comment, or are you the third member of the triangle?
After hearing reports from eye witnesses that they were fighting when this happened I’m really annoyed at them. The could have takes others over the hill with them, like the scouts who witnessed the tragedy. Sad and stupid.
