Malik Morton, who is accused of driving into a group of people on Fort Weaver Road in Ewa Beach, made his first appearance in District Court in shackles on May 23.
The 20-year-old Wahiawa man accused of driving into a group of teenagers in Ewa Beach last month will face a Circuit Court jury trial in August.
Malik Morton, indicted by an Oahu grand jury May 25 with multiple attempted murder counts as the alleged driver of a car that injured two people, including 18-year-old Alisha Brown on May 17, entered a plea of not guilty Tuesday.
Circuit Court Judge Richard Perkins assigned the case to Circuit Judge Glenn Kim and set the trial to begin the week of Aug. 1.
Morton, a former Leilehua High School football player, is being held at the Oahu Community Correctional Center, unable to post bail of $1 million. He entered his plea from the prison through a closed-circuit video link.
According to the idictment, Morton is charged with first-degree attempted murder and second-degree attempted murder of Brown, and first- and second-degree attempted murder of 17-year-old Ryan Ilar.
On the night of the incident, Morton and his friends got into an argument with other people at the party in the middle of Fort Weaver Road near Kihala Street.
Brown and Ilar were taken to the hospital after witnesses told police that they saw Morton speeding in a zigzag motion as he accelerated toward the crowd in the road. Ilar was treated and released.
Morton’s lawyer, Victor Bakke believes that this is a case of self defense.

Lucky for him Glenn Kim is the judge, if found guilty the sentence might be lenient as past practice has shown with Judge Kim.
I hope the Prosecutors office doesn’t put Kealoha’s wife in charge of this one.
