If ever a Hawaii institution needed an “angel” to save it from financial doom, the University of Hawaii Cancer Center was it.
Lo and behold, Barry and Virginia Weinman have appeared with a $20 million gift for the troubled center, on the condition that it retain its National Cancer Institute designation, starting with the timely appointment of a director.
Randall Holcombe, the highly credentialed candidate for the post, is waiting in the wings, so it appears UH has the wherewithal to accept the donation.
The Weinmans clearly have resources to invest in this project, but even so, philanthropists don’t want to throw good money after bad. Their caveats seem reasonable to us.
Correction: Barry and Virginia Weinman have broached a conditional donation of $20 million to the University of Hawaii Cancer Center. His name was misspelled in an earlier version of this story.
