A 20-year-old Haiku woman was killed and two other women hospitalized following a two-car crash in Paia on Tuesday afternoon, Maui police reported.
The female driver of one of the cars, Sydnee L. Apao, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her front seat passenger, a 19-year-old female from Paia, was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room in critical condition.
The collision occurred at 5:27 p.m. on Baldwin Avenue, west of Mahiko Street in Paia.
A blue 2011 Nissan Altima four-door sedan driven by Apao was traveling east on Baldwin Avenue, when it crossed left of center on a right curve in the roadway, colliding with a white 2015 Tesla two-door sedan traveling west. The Tesla was driven by a 65-year-old woman who was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
Maui police said Apao and the Tesla driver were wearing their seat belts, but that the front seat passenger of the Altima was not wearing her seat belt.
This is Maui County’s eighth traffic fatality in 2016, compared with four at this time last year.
