While it might seem as though the latest World Series of Poker champion was crowned only last week (actually, it was in November), it’s already time to look for the next champ. The 47th World Series of Poker is underway at the Rio in Las Vegas, where 69 “bracelet events” will be contested over the next month.
The main event begins July 9 and runs through July 18, when the final nine players will be determined. The final table will again be contested after a three-month break, reconvening Oct. 30. As was the case four years ago, the date of the final has been moved up a week to avoid running simultaneously with the U.S. presidential election, which means the usual “November Nine” will be the “October Nine” this year. All finalists are guaranteed a minimum $1 million prize. Viewing of all tournaments is free and open to the public.
Colossus II: The second year of the WSOP’s Colossus event, which at $565 has the lowest buy-in of the tournament, disappointed slightly with participation falling short of last year. This year’s tournament drew 21,613 entrants compared with last year’s 22,374.
Honky Tonk: John Rich of the country band Big & Rich is opening Redneck Riviera in the Grand Bazaar Shops at Bally’s. The “Nashville-style honky-tonk bar” is slated to open above what will be a Whalburgers in “fall 2016.”
Free rock: The Fremont Street Experience’s “Rock of Vegas” summer concert series plays on downtown’s outdoor stages on select Saturdays this summer. The performer list includes Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, Robby Krieger, Verticle Horizon, Melissa Etheridge and Smash Mouth. All concerts are free.
Question: Is there a betting line on the presidential election?
Answer: Not in the Las Vegas sports books, but several offshore bookmakers have lines up. Listed only as “Republican” or “Democrat” at many books (the candidates aren’t named), the Democrats are currently -350 favorites to retain the White House.
