Foul play ruled out in death of man in Hilo cellblock

Hawaii County police announced today that an autopsy on a 38-year-old Pahoa man who died in police custody, ruled out foul play.

Clarence Hatori collapsed June 16 in the Hilo police cellblock while in custody and was taken to the Hilo Medical Center.

Hatori was pronounced dead June 30.

The medical examiner ruled out foul play July 1 while performing the autopsy, but will await toxicology test results and additional analysis before making a deterination as to cause of death.

Detectives are continuing the investigation, which is classified as a coroner’s inquest.

Hatori had turned himself in on a contempt of court charge and was arrested for investigation of robbery.
