Restrooms and areas contaminated by a sewage spill that began Sunday were blocked off and closed this morning at Kewalo Basin.

Sewage has puddled on roads, warning signs are posted and public bathroom are closed at the Kewalo Basin Small Boat Harbor following a sewage spill Sunday, the state Department of Health reported Wednesday.

The department’s Clean Water Branch said the Hawaii Community Development Authority didn’t report the sewage spill until Tuesday, when it was notified of the sewage overflows.

The area was packed with people who gathered there to watch the Fourth of July fireworks show Monday night.

The spill apparently came from a blocked pipe connecting restrooms to the main sewage line on Ala Moana Boulevard.

Sewage has puddled on roads within the harbor, with limited quantities spilling into nearby harbor waters, Health Department officials said in a news release Wednesday.

The department said it did not know the total volume of the sewage spill because the overflows were intermittent.

Department inspectors learned the sewage overflows began on Sunday and occurred intermittently from manhole covers near the Kewalo Basin restrooms nearest Ala Moana Boulevard. Testing will begin today on waters around Kewalo Basin.

Harbor users are advised to avoid contact with waters in areas near the sign postings. The warning signs will remain up until water quality has returned to normal.

Health Department officials said owners and operators of wastewater systems are required to comply with regulations to protect the public and failure to do so could result in legal action.

Joe Moore was hilarious last night when he said “khon looked into this and asked the tough questions”. Any idea whats makes questioning a sewage spill tough? Maybe for him I guess LOL.

agree but Moore has been a lazy journalist for many years. He is just too bored and dull for anyone to watch. His aging viewers are even moving on.

Go ahead and keep building more high rises in the area and this will be a common thing. The whole Kakaako area smells like human waste.
