Honolulu’s Russell Doane weighed in at 135.5 pounds for his bantamweight bout against Pedro Munhoz on the prelims for UFC Fight Night Las Vegas scheduled for tonight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Doane (14-5, 2-2 UFC) has lost his past two fights and is competing for the first time in a year.
Munhoz (11-2, 1-2), who is from Sao Paulo, Brazil, weighed in at 135 pounds. His last fight was a split decision loss to Jimmie Rivera in November 2015.
The fight will be shown on UFC Fight Pass starting at 12:30 p.m. Hawaii time.
The UFC is holding three events in three days in Las Vegas, capped off by UFC 200 on Saturday night.
Kailua’s Travis Browne (18-3-1, 9-3-1) will fight former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (13-2, 11-2) on the main card of Saturday’s pay-per-view, which is now headlined by Brock Lesnar against Mark Hunt after Jon Jones’ fight against Daniel Cormier was called off Wednesday when Jones was cited for a failed drug test taken last month.
Surfers move on at J-Bay Open
Hawaii’s Sebastian Zietz won his Round 1 heat while John John Florence rebounded from a Round 1 loss to win an elimination heat on Wednesday as the J-Bay Open began at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.
Zietz had the second-highest score of the day (17.90) to advance to today’s third round of the sixth stop of the Samsung Galaxy World Surf League Championship Tour.
Florence and Hawaii’s Keanu Asing finished behind tour rookie Kanoa Igarashi of the U.S. in their opening heat. While Florence defeated Brazil’s Alex Ribeiro in the elimination round, Asing was eliminated by Australia’s Adrian Buchen.
Hawaii’s Dusty Payne finished second in his opening round and will face Australia’s Stuart Kennedy in an elimination round today.
U.S. volleyball finishes pool play unbeaten
The United States swept Argentina on Wednesday to finish pool play 5-0 in the XV Pan American Cup for women’s volleyball in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
University of Hawaii incoming senior opposite Nikki Taylor played sparingly in the final two sets, finishing with two kills in the 25-14, 25-13, 25-23 victory. Setter Micha Hancock continued her record serving run in the tournament, her six aces on Wednesday bringing her total to 37 for five matches.
The U.S. moves on to the championship semifinal on Saturday and will face one of Friday’s quarterfinal winners.
Pairs qualify for Manhattan Beach Open
The duos of James Ka-Kawika Burdine and Kaui Salzman-Rachel Sherman won their respective divisions of the AVPNext-Hawaii Zone competition, earning berths into next week’s Manhattan Beach (Calif.) Open.
Ka-Burdine finished second to Dirk Boehle-Nemanja Komar at Saturday’s zone finale at Queen’s Beach but finished as the overall men’s points leader. The pair never finished lower than third in the five events.
Salzman-Sherman, the most consistent team on the women’s side, won the tour opener and did not place lower than fifth in four events together.
The Manhattan Open begins next Thursday.
Hawaii Island Movers win in Japan
The Hawaii Island Movers defeated Hakuoh University by a score of 3-1 to open their three-week Japan baseball tour.
Edison Sakata, Jantzen Tamanaha and Dustin Imanaka combined for eight of the team’s 10 hits.
The two teams are scheduled to play again today.
