Lippy Espinda, pictured, was the first to advertise on TV in pidgin. “Eh, bruddah!” Lippy would say, “You come down to Lippy’s on Kapiolani and Kalakaua. We got one good used car for you. And you haoles, come down cuz we got one guy speak haole.”

Dick Grimm says Fonzie (Henry Winkler, at right) from the TV show “Happy Days” came to Hawaii to help out with the Easter Seals Telethon one year. He raised hundreds of dollars selling kisses to teeny-boppers.
