Honolulu’s Russell Doane started strong on his feet, but was eventually submitted by Pedro Munhoz at 2:52 of the first round in a bantamweight fight at UFC Fight Night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Thursday.
Doane (14-6, 2-3 UFC) lost his third consecutive fight in the UFC and is in danger of getting cut from the company.
Munhoz (12-2, 2-2) withstood some early damage to the face from Doane, who pelted Munhoz with left and right hands that staggered the Brazilian.
Munhoz eventually worked a guillotine choke that Doane nearly freed himself from, but Munhoz then locked it in tight, forcing Doane to tap.
“He was a tough opponent from the start,” Doane said. “I knew he was going to be and that’s how I prepared for this fight. I knew he’d be tough, so I came out hard, but I got a little over-aggressive. I got caught.”
Doane landed 18 of 41 strikes, while Munhoz had 14 total strikes and successfully finished his one takedown attempt that led to the finish.
