Coast Guard seeking help identifying adrift dive float off Maui
The Coast Guard is asking the public’s help in identifying the owner of an dive float found adrift off Maui on Saturday.
The dive float, which was discovered by the crew of a small passenger vessel about a mile offshore of Black Rock Beach, has a red and white flag attached but no lines or markings.
Sector Honolulu watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast alerting anyone in the area to the situation and launched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point to search the area.
There are currently no reported signs of distress or missing persons in the area. The good Samaritan did not recover the dive float and it remains adrift.
Anyone with information that may help identify the user is asked to contact the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu Command Center at 808-842-2600.
The Coast Guard reminds the public to mark any dive floats with their name and number to allow positive identification of the owner and assist responders in search efforts when such items are discovered at sea. Lost dive floats, life jackets, surfboards or kayaks should be reported to the Coast Guard to prevent unnecessary searches for persons in distress.
