Chef and restaurateur Michael Mina has appointed Mina Group veteran Benjamin Jenkins to lead Stripsteak Waikiki as executive chef.
Jenkins has worked in several Mina restaurants since joining the company 15 years ago; his most recent posting was as executive chef at Michael Mina Las Vegas at the Bellagio.
To promote the opening of the restaurant and the center itself, Mina and Jenkins will conduct a food truck tour of Oahu on July 20 and 21 to introduce potential customers to Mina’s style of cuisine. The restaurant will offer many flavors familiar to local palates, including steamed fish prepared Chinese style; nigiri and poke as part of a Luau Feast Seafood Tower; and more.
Stripsteak opens Aug. 25, along with its host property and other tenants in the redeveloped, upscale International Market Place. The 8,600-square-foot restaurant, described as a modern American steakhouse, will be on the center’s third-level Grand Lanai. Mina also is spearheading a more casual-themed dining hall concept for the center.
Fatboy’s reaches North Shore
The Fatboy’s Restaurant Group has opened its fourth location at Hale‘iwa Store Lots, the final tenant in the retail complex at 66-111 Kamehameha Highway.
The popular Fatboy’s Plate Lunch restaurant is known for local favorites including garlic chicken, beef stew, chicken katsu and hamburger steak, as well as its catering service.
Other locations are at Koko Marina, Waipio and Kailua.
The new restaurant is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays, and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekends.
Fatboy’s Restaurant Group also operates The Hibachi in Kailua, offering poke and other food and supplies for beach outings, tailgate parties and the like; as well as Fatboy’s Fairway Bistro, a full-service restaurant at the Ala Wai Golf Course.
Couple’s breakfast spot opens in Kailua
Over the last seven years they’ve gotten married, had two children and saved money, and today Jen and Nik Lobendahn see a dream come to fruition: the opening of their Kailua brunch spot Over Easy.
The former members of Alan Wong’s culinary team describe their new menu as locally influenced, contemporary brunch fare. A sneak peek on overeasyhi.com lists custard French toast with Cinnamon Toast Crunch; a brunch bowl including avocado, a soft egg, yogurt, spinach and tomato jam; and Kailua Eggs in bacon-and-cabbage broth with Portuguese sausage and rice.
On the heavier side, a fried chicken sandwich will be served with coleslaw and Asian aioli on a French roll, while Tiger Eye meatloaf includes Portuguese sausage and sweet, spicy ketchup.
The restaurant, at 418 Kuulei Road, will be open 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday through Friday, commencing normal hours of operation on Saturday: 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. Over Easy will be closed Mondays.
