Fire destroyed a house, displacing a family of five early Wednesday in Haiku, Maui firefighters said.
The fire erupted at about 2:20 a.m. on Kauhikoa Road and engulfed a 1,100-square-foot single-story home before firefighters arrived, said Maui Fire Department spokesman Edward Taomoto.
Eighteen firefighters contained the fire about half an hour later and extinguished it by 7:03 a.m.
Two adults and two children were home asleep when the fire started; they made it out of the home unharmed.
Firefighters said the blaze started in the carport, but the cause was undetermined. Damage was estimated at $295,000 to the home and its contents. The fire also destroyed two cars and a shuttle bus, and damaged two cars, all parked nearby, causing another $11,500 in damage.
The Red Cross is assisting the family.
