Vegetarian poke recipe gets Hawaii girl lunch at the White House
A Punahou student and her grandmother had lunch at the White House today after winning a national children’s healthy cooking contest with a recipe for vegetarian poke.
Kaira Grace Pan, 9, came up with the recipe with her grandmother Jan Yap, a retired home economics teacher, and entered it in first lady Michelle Obama’s Healthy Lunchtime Challenge for youth.
Pan is representing Hawaii at the lunch billed as the Kid’s State Dinner.
She is one of 56 children selected to attend after submitting recipes for healthy, affordable and tasty lunches.
Kaira’s dish, Poke Me Ke Aloha, emphasizes local ingredients and comprises grape tomatoes, baked tofu, edamame, ulu (breadfruit) and spinach, each seasoned separately, then assembled on one plate alongside quinoa and an Asian guacamole.

The same First lady who took her whole clan to China, at our expense, to tell Chinese people about proper diets?
Other than giving the Chinese a good laugh, she should have gone to any McDonalds in South Chicago to address her real power base.
Michelle had to take her entire family with her to make up for her diplomatic faux pas when she refused to meet or acknowledge Xi Jin Ping’s wife when the Chinese leader and spouse visited the White House. Probably did so because Xi Jin Ping’s wife is a popular singer in China, and 1.2 billion people is a bigger audience than Michelle gets. Totally rude behavior. Even Trump would have at leased hugged her and Melania would have shown her famous thong bikini pose. Yup, that thong bikini – Melania will probably be the best-exposed first lady ever.
Or instead of trying to make a political statement out of every da** article, one might just post congratulations to the young lady and her excellent culinary imagination. I’d like to try her creation.
Ok, I’ll redact my use of a symbolic representation of the word that is is synonym for “condemn” and thus must be “moderated.”

Kind of reminds you of John Travolta’s dad in Saturday Night Fever. P on someone else’s accomplishment.
Nice to live in a bubble.
U remind me of my Chihuahua. He eats something good and then regurgitates it all in a slightly messier format.
Congrats to the young lady for her imagination and her salad.
Maybe she could be the one they are looking for in Hawaii for the kids chef show.
So, that’s what Jan Yap’s granddaughter looks like. Understand that when she pursues a goal, she does it with commitment. A vegetarian poke! Probably a lot cheaper than the real stuff.
Congratulations, Kaira!
Thank you for creating this recipe. I am going to try it as I have had to become VEGAN for medical reasons this year. All new food with good flavor is a blessing to people in my shoes.
Again, thank you and congratulations!
