Many years ago, we had to reduce our water usage due to low water levels in our wells.

Our population has grown significantly since that time, so there is more consumption now. Does the Board of Water Supply have projects planned to increase our potable water supply? Has any consideration been given to purifying the mixed layer of fresh water and sea water in our groundwater? Have sea-water purification systems been considered?

All of these projects take years to complete. We cannot wait for a period of drought to hit us. We could pay for these projects by charging developers fees based on the projected number of people who will be living in their projects.

Paper has too many right-wing columnists

I have been a faithful reader of the Star-Advertiser for many years and I’m outraged at the selection of that awful cartoon depiction of Hillary Clinton (July 6). It looks like something you would find on a white supremacy website.

This is Honolulu, not Jackson, Miss., where hate like this is tacitly approved by the elite.

Also, why are there so many right-wing columnists on our editorial page each week, such as Thomas Sowell, Charles Krauthammer and Cal Thomas?

Why don’t you feature liberal columnists to balance out the conservatives? Once a week we get to read Paul Krugman and Maureen Dowd, and occasionally we get Leonard Pitts Jr. or Thomas Friedman. Why don’t we get to read their columns on a weekly basis? What about Arianna Huffington or E.J. Dionne?

Investigating Airbnb is just anti-business

Are you people insane (“Senators want FTC to investigate Airbnb,” Star-Advertiser, July 14)?

U.S. Sens. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, Elizabeth Warren, D.-Mass., and Dianne Feinstein, D.-Calif. want the Federal Trade Commission to investigate short-term rentals.

What does that tell you about Democrats, the most controlling anti-business people on the face of the Earth? Well, maybe Warren can “build” some income for my 90-year-old mom so she can continue to live in her home here. What shibai. Renting your home out hurts no one. Stop voting Democratic before we’re all poor.

Get homeless to leave high-traffic urban areas

Honolulu is on a huge downward spiral regarding homelessness.

The homeless set up tents on the sidewalks on major streets like Ala Moana Boulevard. Look at the triangle walk area next to power transformers at Ala Moana and Atkinson. The city comes through every so often to move them along, and they come back.

Get aggressive. Stop the talk and do something — get on top of this issue. It’s simple: Get those tents or “homes” out of the heavily traveled and congested areas. We look ridiculous to tourists by allowing the homeless to set up camp in these areas. If it takes daily policing, then do just that.

Our government is letting the city go downhill fast.
