Maui Fire Department personnel assisted three visitors from California who were injured today when a large wave knocked them over near the Olivine Pools area in Kahakuloa.
According to fire officials, a 47-year-old man, his 13-year-old son and the son’s 13-year-old friend were washed over lava rocks and into the ocean but were able to climb to safety with the help of family members.
Firefighters responding to the 12:36 p.m. airlifted the three to a landing zone established along Kahekili Highway, where they were transferred to the care of waiting paramedics. All three were transported by ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
All three suffered multiple lacerations from the rocks. The father and the son’s friend also suffered leg and head injures. All were listed in stable condition.
