A Kihei woman survived a nearly 60-foot fall into Iao Stream Sunday and was hospitalized in serious condition at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Fire officials said the victim was hiking with a friend along a trail off of Iao Valley Road when her friend slipped, slid down an embankment and disappeared over the edge of a cliff into the stream around 4 p.m.

Firefighters descended toward the 25-year-old Kihei woman and found her at the bottom of a steep 50- to 60-foot slope. The last 20 feet was a vertical drop to the bank of Iao Stream. The victim was conscious and complained of leg and back pain. Crews stabilized her injuries and hauled her up the cliff in a rescue basket.

About 16 fire, police and State Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement officers worked together to rescue the woman.
